Smoke Alarms Less Effective Waking Kids Than Mom’s Voice

While the piercing noise of a smoke alarm is effective in waking adults from sleep, it is not as effective in rousing children. Researchers have found that children who slept through a smoke alarm, however, were more likely to wake up at the sound of their mother’s voice. In a study of 24 children six to 12 years old, results showed that 23 woke up upon hearing a recording of their mother telling them to leave the room. In contrast, the smoke alarm woke just 14 of the children. One child did not wake up either to mom’s voice or the alarm..
